Estimating bearing is a key skill for Marine Mammal Observers, and can be used along with range to calculate the location of a marine mammal in relation to the vessel.
Angle boards
The easiest way to estimate bearing to a sighting is to use an angle board. An example is shown below, and a copy is available for download
here.
Bearing estimation
- Line up the angle board with the heading of the vessel or platform; and
- Align a pointer or pencil with the position of the animal, and read of the bearing.
